BUSINESS THINKING FRAMEWORK

The business problem, written down and agreed, before any brand work starts.

Most brand projects start with a deliverable instead of a problem. Someone wants a new logo, a campaign, a website. Ask what business outcome that is supposed to move and the room goes quiet. This step exists to stop that. Before a single word of brand language gets written, I force the business question into the open and write it down in plain language you can argue with.

The framework is four questions answered in writing. What is the actual business problem, stated as a problem and not as a wish. What does the customer already expect from this category before you open your mouth. What number tells you it worked, and who reads that number. And what direction follows from those three, including what you will deliberately not do.

The output is short on purpose. One page you can hand to a designer, a media buyer or a new hire, and they will make roughly the call you would have made. Everything else I do for a brand gets briefed from that page. If it is vague, every project after it inherits the vagueness, and nobody notices until the money is already spent.

WHAT I DO

  • Problem statement — the business problem in one paragraph, written as a problem with a cost attached, not as a request for a deliverable.
  • Customer expectation note — what buyers in this category already assume before you say anything, and which of those assumptions you are fighting.
  • Success metric definition — the one number that moves if this works, how it is measured, and who is responsible for reading it.
  • Constraint list — budget, timeline, internal capacity and category limits that any strategy has to survive contact with.
  • Strategic direction — the chosen path in a few sentences, plus the explicit list of directions being rejected and the reason each one lost.
  • Decision log — every call made in this phase with its reasoning, so the next person to arrive does not reopen a settled argument.
  • The signed one-pager itself — the brief every later project on this service is written against.

HOW I WORK

  1. 01

    INTERROGATE

A long working session where I keep asking why that matters until the answers stop being slogans and start being specifics.

  2. 02

    DEFINE

Writing the problem, the customer expectation and the success metric in language a sceptical outsider could check.

  3. 03

    CONSTRAIN

Mapping budget, timeline and internal capacity so the direction is one you can actually execute, not one that reads well.

  4. 04

    COMMIT

You sign off the one-pager, rejected directions included, and it becomes the brief for everything that follows.

BEST FOR

  • Companies about to spend real money on a rebrand, campaign or website without agreeing what it is meant to fix.
  • Founders who can describe the product fluently but cannot name the business number a brand project should move.
  • Teams where marketing, sales and leadership each describe the problem slightly differently and nobody has noticed.

NOT THIS

  • Not a positioning exercise. This defines the problem; choosing the one idea you own happens in Brand Strategy & Positioning.
  • Not a business plan or a financial model. No projections, valuations or unit-economics modelling comes out of this.
  • Not market research. Gathering evidence on competitors and buyers is its own step, not something folded in here quietly.

THE PROOF

Published case studies from brand solutions work. Each one names the client and shows what was delivered.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

A kickoff call ends with notes nobody opens again. This ends with a signed one-page brief naming the problem, the metric and the directions you rejected. The difference shows up three months later, when someone asks why a decision was made and there is an actual answer in writing.
